Immediate Actions

Follow these immediate guide lines:

Assess

Think before you act and assess the overall situation. Try to remain calm.

Plan

Plan quickly your best course of actions.

Act

Carry out your plan but reappraise in the event of the situation changing. Your actions should follow the these guidelines:

Make Safe

Prevent the situation getting any worse, some examples might be:

• Do not put yourself in danger.
• Send someone to control traffic.
• Turn off the gas and open windows and doors.
• Switch off the electricity before touching casulalty.

Immediate First Aid

If you are not first aid trained then all you should do is:

• Do not move the patient.
• Make sure the airway is clear.

Get Assistance

Even if you are on your own and even if you are first aid trained, go and dial 999 to call for an ambulance. If you ask someone else to make the call, remind them to tell the operator:

• Exactly where you are.
• How many people are in need of assistance.
• What you think is the cause of the accident and the general condition of the casualties.
• Stay with the operator until they have no more questions.
• Return to the scene and assist where possible.
• If you are first aid trained then administer immediate treatment.
• Otherwise, try and enlist the help of someone who is trained in first aid.
